Hit the flower to cause another tower to appear, which has this puzzle piece on it. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – From the next checkpoint, go to the left to find a cave area with this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – When you reach the area with the monkey bars, you can reach this puzzle piece to the left side of the second one. Artifact 2/3 “Playstation Portable” – After riding the rotating platform, there is a switch on the other side which creates a lily pad platform back to the right.
Puzzle Piece 3/4 – In the third hang glider section you will need to avoid a number of mines that appear in the air. Just before reaching the platform at the end, a puzzle piece will appear directly in the middle of the area that you need to grab before landing. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – When crossing the tightrope while being blown to the side, jump over to the platform with the flower.
This PS5 pack-in most certainly hues closer to a technical showcase, essentially a loosely-structured sandbox to mess around in and discover what the PS5 has to offer. But it has enough collectibles, creative ideas, and genuinely exciting uses of the DualSense that PS5 owners shouldn’t brush this one aside in the launch lineup. After months and months of hearing how the DualSense would immerse me like never before, Astro’s Playroom put promises into practice and impressively proved what’s possible with the PS5’s new controller. Whether it’s the main menu with its signature Astro theme to celebrate the character, or CPU Plaza’s grandiose techno track and even Cooling Springs having a nice and cozy tune in its ice level.

I can’t say I had very high expectations for Astro’s Playroom, a game that comes free with every PlayStation 5 console. I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom. That PS4 game was the sort of thing you boot up once, mess around with for 30 minutes, and then forget it exists. It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback.
Grand Tourist Special Bot
After the second use of the Hang Glider, on the left you’ll find a massive sword stuck in the ground. This is an unmistakable reference to Final Fantasy VII for the PS1, released in 1997 by Square Enix. In particular, the use of the Buster Sword under a spotlight makes this is a reference to the game’s title screen. The first level of the game opens with Astro barreling down a waterslide before splashing in some water and walking up onto a beach. It’s hard to put into words, but the thunk of landing in the water is a dull, flat sensation that feels, well, like landing in water. Similarly, there’s a grainy effect when you walk across the beach, as if you could feel the sand.
There are not many games released in recent memory that have utilized the DualSense controller, like Japan Studio. The fun gameplay mixed with the nostalgia is a potent mix of a successful game. Some players would describe this project as a tech demo for the PlayStation 5, and while it won’t be false, Astro’s Playroom is more than that. The game is broken down into multiple levels, and each one stands out in its unique way.
Once you’re on the other side, tug the Wires on the wall to reveal the next sequence with moving blocks. Jump onto the left-hand one, right it up, then Beam Glide to the block on the right. At this spot, look at the wall between the red and green level entrys to find a ramp heading to the basement floor of the Plaza, where many different Bots are hanging out. The Astro franchise is built upon the success of the PlayStation brand and became the de facto mascot. Another display you can unlock for the Labo area is a sign with the Sony Interactive Entertainment logo which, if punched three times, will drop down and reveal the Sony Computer Entertainment logo. This is the old name for Sony Interactive Entertainment, which changed to that name in 2016.

The SingStar Microphone was the iconic peripheral of the SingStar games, of which there were over 70 different releases (including the same game with different setlists per region). Coming as a pair of one red and one blue microphone, they came bundled with an adapter that both mics plugged into. This was so that they only take up one of the PS2’s USB ports, leaving the remaining port open for the EyeToy camera. The Network Adapter allowed the PlayStation 2 to connect online for multiplayer, sliding into the Expansion Bay. It also had space for a hard drive, which was required for some games, while others could use them for optional DLC or game installation to reduce load times, much like the PS3 would do.
Astro’s Playroom asks you over and over to fondly remember the memories that you and Grandpa PlayStation made together. But, more importantly, it’s a promise of new and treasured memories to come. Sony leans into its PlayStation past in this frequently innovative, supremely charming old-school 3D platformer. However, I have been very disappointed in their increasingly silly take on PSSR. Before you proceed, we recommend you play around with the D-Pad, which will cause Astro to perform four different dances through the four directions.
After the level starts, proceed ahead until you reach a wire sticking out from the ground. Proceed ahead and soon you will reach the second wire sticking out from the ground as shown in the second picture below. There you will see another wire sticking out from the ground on the left side as shown in the second picture below. To rescue this special Bot, you must have completed the game and defeated the final boss.
So, before hopping into Cooling Springs, there’s a small pool for Astro to splash around in, or ahead of SSD Speedway, I can stomp around the mechanical mesh platforms that will blanket the upcoming levels. They’re the most subtle uses of the DualSense, but it’s a nice way to set the scene. Astro’s Playroom is a 2020 platform game developed by Japan Studio‘s Team Asobi division and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5.
